THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE

In the latest years genset builders came out with the unfortunate idea to install the Automatic Mains Failure controller on the generator.

On the engineering point of BERNINI DESIGN view, installing the AMF controller directly on the generator is NOT A GOOD solution. It is not a brilliand idea to connect the UTILITY POWER wires [2] to the AMF controller inside a generator panel. It means that you have to carry 4 wires inside of it WITH THE RISK of affecting low voltage circuit or sensitive parts.

This is the worst solution if you want a safe and reliable connection of the generator. In case of lighting, you can compromise the low voltage electrical parts of the engine automation circuits. Even worse, you have to drive the coils of the transfer switch [6] placed several meters (even hundreds) far away. In other words, you have to wire at least 7 cables for nothig. Not mention that all the time you manually need to transfer the load, you have to use the buttons provided on the AMF controller. When you need to control your LOAD [7], you have to operate on the generator [3].

Not mention that in case of failure of the AMF module, your generator is dead. Last but does not mean least, the difficulties to provide current measurement to the AMF controller when the load is connected to the UTILITY POWER. You have to add and connect additional current transformers and at least 4 wires.

What is a combined AMF ATS control panel

An AMF control panel (Automatic Mains Failure) is the ideal choice in cases where you have to control a generator that is connected to the Mains in a standby configuration. A combined AMF & ATS control panel is a panel fitted with an AMF module that controls the ATS (Automatic Trabsfer Switch). The AMF module takes over, in a fully automatic way, the connection assignment of the LOAD to MAINS or GENERATOR avoiding connection MAINS to GENERATOR. The AMF module continuously scans the electrical parameters of the utility power (or MAINS if you will). 

The panel includes miscellaneous equipment:  battery charger, electronic circuit boards,  power relays, overvoltage protection devices, current transformers and finally terminal blocks. The AMF  controller is conveniently tasked with driving the power circuit breakers or directly the transfer switch. The size of the contactors and wire gauges define the power rating of the panel.  Available sizes on the market are normally in the range 25-500kVA.

Just to provide an idea about 'kVA' please note that a normal house or big villa needs as much as 9kVA of power. This means the following utilities working simultaneously: 1 fridge, 1 air conditioner (or an electric heater), some lights, an oven,  some tools for D.I.Y., 2 computers, 1 TV set an so on. A 10kVA control panel can fit in a plastic that aesthetically complies with your electrical installation.   A qualified electrician can install the combined AMF/ATS panel in a few hours. We do not recommend to practice D.I.Y. with electric panel and generator. Once the panel is in place you can connect a portable generator also. A small factory needs as much as 80kVA. A small industry up to 500kVA. The are four basic types of AMF panels: INDUSTRIAL, COMMERCIAL,  HOME & TELECOM
