WITHOUT A BACKUP GENERATOR

 A) Normal connection of a house (3) to the Public Utility Mains. The Public Utility circuit breaker (1) output is fed to the house (2).

WITH A BACKUP GENERATOR

 B) Connection of the EVOLVE panel (5) and Generator (4). The output of the Public Utility circuit breaker is connected to the EVOLVE panel (Mains Input). The EVOLVE ATS panel output is connected to the house (2). The Generator (4) is connected to the EVOLVE panel generator  input. EVOLVE ATS panel  manages, in a fully automatic way, the connection assignment of the HOUSE (3) to MAINS (1) or GENERATOR (4).

 Being rated 40 amps ATS@230Vac it cover the necessities of a small to large house. In other words it satisfies the necessities of one or two families. A normal house or big villa needs as much as 9kVA of power. This means the following utilities working simultaneously: 1 fridge, 1 air conditioner (or an electric heater), some lights, an oven,  some tools for D.I.Y., 2 computers, 1 TV set an so on.

The Evolve ATS panel contains a real time clock and a set of configurations that allow you to enable or disable the automatic function; this includes enabling the periodic test of the engine at a particular time slot in the day.

 

ABOUT BACK-FEEDING

 The most common dangerous issue about home generator connection is when someone forgets to throw the main circuit breaker to electrically isolate the house from the power utility. Then, the generator could send electrical power beyond the house and out onto the power utility grid.The proper way to connect a generator to you hour house is only by using a transfer switch. In case it is manual it is about a switch with two positions: POWER UTILITY and GENERATOR. It consists in a sort of breaker interlock for generator and power utility. In other words, it is not possible to simultaneously activate POWER UTILITY and GENERATOR.

POWER UTILITY & GENERATOR CONNECTION

The general action for an home generator connection is described as ‘BREAK’ before ‘MAKE’. So in switching  from POWER UTILITY and GENERATOR (and vice versa) you will have no power in your house. The transfer switch panel prevents power from the generator from flowing outside the house, where it can injure power utility workers. This is out of any doubts the most reliable and cost effective solution. It is mandatory, in any case, to let an expert electrician to make the work done up to code. A qualified electrician knows better how to wire a generator transfer switch. Before installing a transfer switch and an home generator connection you have to decide how to connect the generator to the automatic transfer switch. It could be done in several ways.

 

How to connect generator to house without transfer switch

 This is the common most asked question. Unfortunately there is no a safe manner to do this. Except the case you are a qualified electrician and you possess the skills to manually isolate the electric circuit that you want to supply in case of power outage. This is the case of prolonged power outage when you are forced to install a generator for several hours or days. The procedure consists mainly in modifying the electric circuit in your house. Or more exactly, you can remove the plug of the fridge (for example) and you connect to the generator by using a proper cord. Or you can connect together part of the electric light system.

USING A DRYER OUTLET

 The most common solution for  home generator connection to a house is through dryer outlet. In this case, your electrician will install a dryer outlet in a proper place. The outlet must be very well protected. The functionality of it must be regularly verified. To the dryer outlet you will connect the portable generator when necessary and, why not, you can permanently connect your back up generator. Hooking generator to house through outlet is the most common practice assuming you have installed a transfer switch in a ‘up to code’ manner. How to a connect portable generator in a way to make an home generator connection to the electrical panel is also possible if the panel has a built in outlet designed for this purpose. Please note that these kinds of outlets have a special contact arrangement. The contacts are basically ‘MALE’. As a matter of fact you have to consider this plus as a ‘LOAD’ not like a ‘SOURCE’. The source is provided by the cord connected to the generator with ‘FEMALE’ contact.  Consider all the time the risk of back-feeding generator through dryer outlet in home generator connection scheme. So we vividly recommend that you choose our safest transfer switch wiring. You do not have to deal with cords, cables, plugs and stuffs like that.

INSTALLING AN AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH

When making a home generator connection to an automatic transfer switch take also into consideration the possibility to partially connect the electric system of your house. You may suffer problems in case of a failure of the automatic transfer switch by connecting the whole house transfer switch for portable generator to your house. Does not matter the configuration you choose. The most important thing is to let a licensed electrician installing your transfer switch. The automatic transfer switch is the top solution. Section  1.0  -  Introduction

 The EVOLVEpanel integrates an Automatic Mains Failure control module, a Generating Set controller and a 40 Amps Automatic Transfer Switch (60Amp.EVOLVE 12KVA). The EVOLVE panel provides visual indication by means of LEDs and Graphic Display for all parameters and alarms. Figure 1 illustrates the layout of the front panel. Section 2.0  -   AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH Selecting an Operational Mode

The automatic transfer switch mode of operation  is selected by the pushbuttons [O] / [MAN] / [AUTO-TEST]. Before removing the battery supply, the EVOLVE panel stores the mode of operation in the memory. When you reconnect the battery, the EVOLVE automatic transfer switch enters the Mode of operation previously stored in this memory.

Section  2.1  -   OFF  mode

  Push and hold the [O] pushbutton for at least 3 seconds to turn the EVOLVE  OFF: it opens the contactors  and stops the engine if it is running. Push the [MAN] or [AUTO-TEST] pushbutton to turn the EVOLVE  ON.

 

The OFF mode offers a way to disconnet your house (or Load) from Mains & Generator. Only Manually operated circuit breakers must be used to totally isolate the system preventing electrical hazards in your home.

 Section  2.2  -  Automatic Transfer Switch Manual Mode

Push the [MAN] mode button; the yellow indicator on the button will turn on. Push [MAN] until the engine starts (the yellow LED is then blinking fast). When the green indicator ‘Generator presence’ lights­­­­, push the [I-KG] pushbutton; the green indicator KG will turn on. Do not push the [I-KG] pushbutton if the green indicator ‘G’ is blinking or it is off. To transfer the load to the Mains, push the [I-KM] pushbutton when the green indicator ‘Mains presence’ is on; the KG will open and KM will close after a 2-second delay.

LINE VOLTAGE IS EXPOSED WITHIN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH AND ANCILLARY CIRCUITRY EVEN WHEN THE GREEN LEDs ARE TOTALLY OFF

Do not work on equipment or electrical system, which is controlled by the EVOLVE  without isolating it first. When servicing the engine, disconnect the Mains and the battery. We recommend that warning signs are placed on the generating set indicating that the EVOLVE  could start the engine at anytime.

Section 2.3 -  AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH  mode of operation

Push the [AUTO] pushbutton until the yellow LED illuminates. The contactor of the Mains (KM) opens after a programmable delay in case of Mains failure; the engine starts and, after a [WARM UP] time, if the alternator is properly working, the contactor of the Generator (KG) will close in order to provide electricity to your house. If the Mains restores, the KG will open and KM will close after a short delay. The engine will stop after a [COOL DOWN] time. The EVOLVE panel  will periodically test the engine if the Test Scheduler is correctly programmed (section 8.2). During the test, the yellow LED ‘TEST’ turns on and will continue to blink as long as engine is running. The EVOLVE panel can start the engine if a Remote Test is activated; the yellow LED ‘TEST’ will operate in the same way of Test Scheduler. You can disable the control of the Mains and the starting of the engine by programming the SLEEP mode (section 8.4) or by using the ‘Mains Simulated’ function (section 12.0). You can stop the engine at anytime by selecting Auto or Manual mode. You can also push the [O] pushbutton, but in this case Evolve panel opens the circuit breakers and enters the OFF mode of operation

Section 2.4 - TEST  mode

Push and hold the [AUTO-TEST] pushbutton until the yellow LED TEST illuminates (5 seconds). The yellow LED will blink when engine runs. The EVOLVE panel  will start the engine and transfer the load to the Generator only in the case of Mains failure if not otherwise programmed (parameter [KG TEST CONTROL] in section 8.3). To exit the TEST mode, push the [AUTO-TEST] pushbutton briefly or push the [MAN] button. Once in Manual Mode you can stop the engine pushing the [MAN] pushbutton.

Section 2.5 - SLEEP mode (AMF Scheduler)

The automatic transfer switch, once in [SLEEP MODE] mode, will not start the engine even in the case of Mains failure. This function is required when you want to disable the automatic transfer switch in a particular period of the day or during the night. First, you have to program the period of the day in which you allow the start of the engine in the case of Mains Failure (see section 8.4). After that, enter the AUTO mode (see 2.3). Outside of the programmed timetable, the green Mains Presence Led will blink and the message [SLEEP MODE] will appear on the display. In cases where you need to start the engine during [SLEEP MODE], you are requested to enter the MAN mode and proceed according the instructions given in section 2.2. If you enter the AUTO mode when Sleep Mode is active, the engine will stop
